World Hunger and The Global Poverty Act

By caroline on August 12, 2008

World hunger is one of the most pressing issues facing the human population in the 21st century. An FAO study estimates that hunger and poverty claim 25,000 lives every day and 854 people around the globe do not get enough to eat each day. The Global Poverty Act, currently being held in the the US Senate, will address the issue of global hunger and poverty by committing the United States to an action plan. I would like this discussion to reflect on what that plan should entail, and general thoughts and stories about hunger, poverty and food insecurity.

A huge challenge, certainly. I think one of the critical elements is how we get people to engage with this issue. Our survey work has found more interest among the public on these "global development" issues, and the public's policy priorities are a lot more humanitarian than most experts think. But still, this is not a major focus for Americans and they don't understand a lot of the twists and turns of the issue (the food-or-fuel debate, for example).
